Description:

This limited edition Autumn Wafer Ultima Down Jacket is £156 less than our standard Wafer Ultima K down jacket. Although a little heavier (by just 55g) it boasts a water-resistant Ultrashell fabric outer, proofing the jacket to a higher degree. Part of our Summer Light, Autumn Fast Collection.

With late summer and autumn’s lower temperatures comes more condensation, increasing the likelihood of damp gear inside and outside your tent. Like the rest of our Summer Light, Autumn Fast Collection, this jacket is ‘Autumnised’, built to repel damp and drizzle. At the same time it’s incredibly light, helping you travel fast.

It's designed with an eye towards mountain marathon racers, lightweight backpackers, bike-packers, multistage ultra runners, lightweight campers and wilderness trampers – but well suited to anybody who wishes to move fast and light.

Incredibly, it weighs less than a base layer and packs down into a teeny stuff sac. The longer body length and higher collar work to cut cold air ingress making for even warmer performance. And that’s really not bad, when you consider the 240g/8.5oz weight!

This astonishing zero degree down top uses our water-resistant Ultrashell fabric to provide total windblock and help keep out the damp and drizzle. The rare 950 fill-power down ensure extremely weight-efficient insulation. This is a top to wear though, not just to weigh: added function comes from the full length zip, the hand warmer pockets, and the optional down filled hood.

Only available August and September.

Ultralight 7X fabric (weight: 22 gsm)

7X is our new sheer-light 7 denier fabric. An exquisitely fine rip-stop nylon, 7X is incredibly light, highly wind-resistant and has first-rate down proofing. This fabric helps us create the very lightest of gear in the PHD range. Of course the lighter the fabric the lighter the sleeping bag or down clothing, and the less space it takes up in your rucksack. This fabric is so light it actually helps to allow even greater lofting of the down too.

Ultrashell (weight: 40 gsm)

One of the lightest of PHD's coated materials. This ripstop nylon provides complete wind block and good water resistance at minimal weight. Ultrashell gives an excellent upgrade to performance with very little weight penalty.

950 fillpower down

A newcomer to our range. European goose of rare quality. A high value alternative at the top levels of performance. More on our down insulation.

Reviews are for our standard Wafer Down Jacket, which is 50g lighter, but does not have a water-resistant outer fabric

"This jacket is astonishing. It's the weight of a base layer but warmer than a thick fleece. For backpacking it's ideal. I've used it on my last three long-distance walks, and over an ultralight thin synthetic insulated top it's kept me warm down to -7°C. The low weight and warmth are due to the extremely high fill power down, the ultralight shell fabric, the ultralight zips and the minimalist design.

PHD's down comes from European birds that aren't live-plucked – PHD visits the producers. Most other materials and components are sourced in Europe too. The garment itself is made in the UK. The fabric is surprisingly durable – I haven’t ripped it yet. It's not designed to be worn under a pack without a shell over it, however. It lacks a hood, but a stud-on one can be added. I recommend it as it makes a big difference to the warmth. The two pockets are roomy and just usable when wearing a hipbelt, though the bottoms are cut off.

The Large size fits me comfortably worn over a thin synthetic insulated jacket or medium-weight fleece.

The cost is high but there’s nothing anywhere near this weight that provides this amount of warmth or packs down so well – it can be squashed into a small ball."
Chris Townsend, TGO Magazine

"Made in Britain, with all components coming from within Europe and stuffed with traceable down. All good stuff. Unfeasibly warm for something so light. Impressive manufacturing ethics. Score: 10/10"
Trail Running Magazine feature on 'Best Ethical Kit'.

"Seriously impressive warmth, premium-quality down and ultra-light weight. If you want to stay warm, this is hard to beat."
Walk Magazine (Official Magazine of The Ramblers), 5/5 'Best in Test'.

"PHD's super-lightweight Wafer Down Jacket is a third less bulky than a fleece, offering superior standby warmth without taking up the space."
Wanderlust Magazine.

"Performed brilliantly. The hood was a great fit and tight enough to the face to keep off wind. Absolutely incredible warmth / weight ratio, could not be more impressed. Minimal packed bulk meant it could be kept in a rucksack pocket for easy access when temperatures dropped. I honestly cannot suggest improvement for this product."
Nikolas Bjelic on the Everest Base Camp Trail, Nepal.

"Offers perfect temperature control in almost every type of situation (between -5°C and +20°C)"
— Alex F-B.

"Absolutely love the warmth and weight! Amazing engineering!"
Peter Reiter.

"It's brilliant!"
Ian Gauntlett.

"There are cheaper down jackets, but none made in the UK and none that'll fit into your one litre cooking pot when not in use."
Singletrack Magazine, 'Recommended'.
